 They Were in Their Homes

They were in their homes
and the soldiers came
and they made them leave their homes
and the trucks came
and they piled them in the trucks
and they took them to the trains
and they shoved them in the wagons
and they rode for endless hours
and they rode for endless days
and they rode across Europe
and they arrived to the final destination
and there was noise and confusion
and there were dogs and shouts
and there was fear
and there were cries and tears
and there were lines
and there was right
and there was left
and they were again herded
and they were all undressed
and they were all pushed in
and they were all locked in

Joseph, Etus, Bogy, Endre, Katy, Marika, Viorika, Esti, Samshon, Tzili, Bubbi, Ita, Perl, Betzalel, Israel, Shlomo, Shlomo, Shimon, Rivka...

and five million nine hundred and ninety nine thousand nine hundred and eighty one other Jews...

They were killed. They had been in their homes, and they were killed...
