murdered in the Holocaust: Auschwitz abt 1944 by the nazis. Josef
did his military service in the Austro-Hungarian army, where he was a "Hussar";
he was posted in Nagyvarad - (Oradea, Rumania of today), in Transilvania. While there, he fell in love with Etus, who came from a small town
close to Nagyvarad-. His mother opposed the marriage, but he went ahead and married anyway, moving away from Drahova
and raising his family in Nagyvarad. After a while the
situation was accepted and the Salamon family visited Drahova for certain Holidays. Josef
was a grain merchant for some time, after which he went into the tannery business. They
were religious but nonetheless he lent his house for meetings of Hashomer Hatzair Zionist
youth. |
